Design 1104 Friendship 65, 65' Sloop

The Friendship 65 represents an evolution of the highly successful Friendship brand of classically inspired sailing yachts. The 65 fills the gap for those offshore and coastal cruisers searching for a no- compromise sailing yacht between the Friendship 53’ and the Friendship  75’.

The shallow draft (6’-3”) centerboard hull form is a proven design synonymous with the Friendship brand, these centerboard hull forms have proven to be an extremely seaworthy and slippery passage making platforms. The wide beam and deep delta shaped hull form allows abundant interior volume for accommodations, tankage and machinery that an offshore cruising boat requires.

The shoal draft Friendship yachts all carry ample beam which optimizes not only the interior volume but also adds to the form stability which when combined with the flared bulb keel and high ballast ratio, these attributes provide the capability of carrying a tall and powerful sail plan, thereby maximizing sailing performance.

The forward underwater sections of the 65 incorporate a slightly V-shaped section to provide a smooth entry in difficult seas. This hull shape is also proven to provide additional lift which is further enhanced by the deep retracting centerboard making the 65 an offshore performance sailing machine.

In designing the new Friendship 65 the goal was to create a design that maintained common elements of an aft cockpit yacht, features that provide for a dry, secure location for sailing than the traditional center cockpit designs.  The more aft location of the cockpit when tucked behind the low pilothouse house not only enhances the security of the cockpit, the pilothouse is both an extension of the sailing cockpit as it is an expansion of the interior arrangement.

Below decks, the spacious living accommodations are cleverly separated from the open pilothouse by the galley and lower salon.  Rich, satin finished raised panel mahogany joinery, complete with detailed bull nose fiddle edges throughout, provides a classic yet serene refuge from the elements above.

The interior layout for the 65 will be designed to each owner’s particular requirements; several interior plans have been developed from which potential owners can use as inspiration to develop their own perfect cruising platform.

On deck the Friendship 65 will be a further refinement of the simplistic single handed sailing approach developed for the 40, 53 and 75. Utilizing the latest developments in power assisted sailing, in boom fully battened furling mainsails and roller furling genoa, captive main sheet systems and optional captive genoa sheeting with controls for each function strategically located in the cockpit allow for one person operation.

Built in New Zealand of only the finest components available, the Friendship 65 is destined to be as well admired as her sisterships.
